Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Eighth grade-level homeschool student will have a basic understanding of the rules, skills, and strategies involved in playing Rugby League.

Materials and Prep

  • Rugby ball
  • Cones or markers for boundaries
  • Open space or field
  • Printed copies of the Rugby League rules

Prior to the lesson, familiarize yourself with the rules and basic skills of Rugby League. Print out copies of the rules for reference during the lesson.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Begin with a dynamic warm-up consisting of jogging, high knees, lunges, and arm circles to prepare the body for physical activity.
  2. Introduction to Rugby League: Provide a brief overview of Rugby League, including its origins, basic rules, and key positions.
  3. Skills Practice: Demonstrate and practice basic Rugby League skills such as passing, catching, and tackling. Provide individual feedback and guidance to ensure proper technique.
  4. Game Simulation: Divide the student into teams and set up a small-sided game to simulate a Rugby League match. Emphasize teamwork, communication, and applying the skills learned during the practice session.
  5. Cool-down and Reflection: End the lesson with a cool-down consisting of static stretches. Engage in a group discussion to reflect on the lesson, asking the student to share their thoughts and experiences.
