Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of exploration during the 1600s, including the roles of crew members, the types of missions undertaken, and the importance of planning for a voyage. They will also learn about teamwork and decision-making through a fun simulation activity.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencils for planning
- Hardtack and salted beef (prepared in advance)
- Mango and pineapple (to be cut during the simulation)
- Maps of South America and the surrounding islands (drawn or printed)
- Research materials on 1600s exploration (books, articles, etc.)
- Set up a space for the simulation (table, chairs, etc.)
Before the lesson, make sure the student has some background knowledge about explorers from the 1600s and their missions. They should have completed some research to understand the context of their simulation.
Activities
-
Mission Planning:
The student will choose a mission for their exploration vessel, deciding whether they want to search for new land, trade with indigenous peoples, or find treasures. They will also determine the number of crew members needed and their specialties, such as navigator, cook, or carpenter.
-
Cargo Preparation:
Next, the student will plan the cargo for their voyage. They will decide what supplies are essential for their mission, including food, tools, and trade goods. This will involve some math to calculate the quantity of each item needed for the crew.
-
Simulation Voyage:
During the simulation, the student will role-play as the captain and crew, making decisions as they "sail" to the islands off the coast of South America. They will face challenges and opportunities that require teamwork and problem-solving.
-
Snack Time:
As they simulate their journey, the student will enjoy hardtack and salted beef, just like explorers did. Once they reach the islands, they will cut and eat fresh mango and pineapple to experience the difference in food during their voyage.
Talking Points

- "Every crew member had a special job. Why do you think it’s important for everyone to work together on a mission?"
- "Planning is super important! If you forget something, it could make your journey much harder."
- "How do you think the explorers felt when they finally saw land after a long journey at sea?"
