Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify basic keyboard notes, play a simple melody, and understand the concept of rhythm and tempo.

Materials and Prep

  • Keyboard (or piano)
  • Comfortable seating for playing
  • Space to move around

Before the lesson, make sure the keyboard is plugged in and ready to play. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the keyboard, especially the white and black keys.

Activities

  • Note Naming Game:

Start by naming the keys on the keyboard. Play a game where you call out a note, and the student finds and plays it. This will help them learn the names of the notes in a fun way!

  • Simple Melody Practice:

Choose a simple melody, like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". Break it down into small sections, and practice playing it together. This will build their confidence in playing songs!

  • Rhythm Clapping:

Before playing, clap out different rhythms together. Then, try to play those rhythms on the keyboard. This activity helps them understand the importance of timing in music!

  • Creative Composition:

Encourage the student to create their own short melody using the notes they’ve learned. They can experiment with different sounds and rhythms, making music their own!

Talking Points

  • "The white keys are called natural notes, and the black keys are called sharp and flat notes. Can you find a natural note?"
  • "When we play music, we need to think about rhythm! Rhythm is what makes music feel like it has a beat. Can you clap to the beat with me?"
  • "Every song has a melody, which is the main tune. Let’s try to play a melody together. Can you sing it while we play?"
  • "Music is like a language! When we play notes, we are talking to each other through sound. What do you want to say with your music?"
  • "Experimenting is fun! If you play a note and it doesn’t sound right, that’s okay! It’s all part of learning. What do you think will happen if we try a different note?"
  • "Playing music can make us feel different emotions. How does this melody make you feel? Happy, sad, or excited?"
  • "Remember, practice makes us better! Just like learning to ride a bike, the more we practice, the easier it gets. Let’s keep playing!"
