Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic process of how air dry clay is made, including the ingredients and methods involved. The student will also have the opportunity to create a simple project using air dry clay, enhancing their creativity and hands-on skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Plastic wrap or a damp cloth
  • Optional: Food coloring (for fun colors)

Before starting, ensure that the workspace is clean and that the student understands the importance of measuring ingredients accurately for the best results. It might also be helpful to have a recipe on hand for reference.

Activities

  1. Mixing the Clay

Guide the student to measure out 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 1 cup of water into a mixing bowl. If they want to add color, they can mix in a few drops of food coloring. Let them stir the mixture until it forms a dough-like consistency.

  2. Shaping the Clay

Once the clay is mixed, encourage the student to shape it into their favorite object, like a small animal or a bowl. This activity will help them practice their fine motor skills and creativity.

  3. Drying the Clay

After they finish shaping their project, help them place it on a drying rack or a plate. Cover it with plastic wrap or a damp cloth to prevent it from drying too quickly. Discuss how long the clay will take to dry and what happens during the drying process.

  4. Reflection

Once the clay is dry, have a discussion about the whole process. What did they enjoy the most? What challenges did they face? This helps reinforce what they learned and encourages critical thinking.
