Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the daily feeding routine of chickens, including the importance of proper nutrition, the types of food chickens need, and how to safely and effectively feed them.
Materials and Prep
- Chicken feed (grains, pellets, or kitchen scraps)
- Water container for chickens
- Feeding container (like a bowl or feeder)
- Notebook for observations
- Pencil or pen
Before starting the lesson, ensure you have a safe and clean area for the chickens to eat, and familiarize yourself with the types of food that are suitable for chickens.
Activities
- Feeding Time!
Have the student gather the chicken feed and water. Let them observe the chickens as they feed them. Encourage them to notice how the chickens react to different types of food.
- Observation Journal
Ask the student to keep a journal of their observations during feeding time. They can note how much food the chickens eat, their behavior while eating, and any preferences they seem to have.
- Nutrition Lesson
Discuss the nutritional needs of chickens. Have the student research or think about what kinds of food are best for chickens and why. They can create a simple chart comparing different food types.
- Design a Feeding Schedule
Have the student create a daily feeding schedule. They can include times for feeding, types of food, and any notes on chicken behavior or health observations.
Talking Points
- "Chickens need a balanced diet just like we do! What do you think happens if they don’t get the right food?"
- "Observing how chickens eat can tell us a lot about their health. What did you notice about their behavior when we fed them?"
- "Different foods provide different nutrients. Can you name some foods that are good for chickens?"
- "Keeping a feeding schedule helps us remember to feed our chickens and ensures they get the right amount of food every day. Why do you think routine is important?"
