Objective

By the end of this lesson, Pearl will have a better understanding of the significance of Lunar New Year, its traditions, and how it is celebrated around the world, particularly in 2025. She will also create a fun project to showcase her learning!

  • Books or articles about Lunar New Year (if available)
  • Craft supplies (e.g., scissors, glue, decorative items)
  • Pre-prepared questions to guide research

Activities

  • Lunar New Year Research:

    Pearl will research the history and significance of Lunar New Year. She can look for interesting facts about the animals of the zodiac and how each year is celebrated differently in various countries.

  • Create a Zodiac Animal Poster:

    After learning about the zodiac, Pearl can choose her zodiac animal for 2025 (the Year of the Snake) and create a colorful poster that includes fun facts about the animal, its symbolism, and how it relates to the Lunar New Year.

  • Make a Lantern:

    Pearl can design and make a simple paper lantern. She can decorate it with symbols of good luck and prosperity, which are important themes during Lunar New Year celebrations.

  • Lunar New Year Recipe Exploration:

    Pearl can research traditional foods eaten during Lunar New Year, such as dumplings or rice cakes. She can even help prepare one of these dishes with a family member if possible!
