Objective

By the end of this lesson, Ursula will understand the basic structure of atoms, including protons, neutrons, and electrons, and how they interact to form different elements. She will also learn how to represent atoms using simple models and diagrams.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Access to a computer or device for research (optional)
  • A whiteboard or large piece of paper for drawing (optional)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to review the basic definitions of elements, compounds, and the periodic table. This will give Ursula a good foundation to build upon.

Activities

  • Atom Model Creation:

    Ursula will create a 3D model of an atom using paper, colored pencils, or any available materials. She can choose an element she likes and represent its protons, neutrons, and electrons accurately. This hands-on activity will help her visualize the structure of an atom.

  • Periodic Table Exploration:

    Ursula will research her favorite element from the periodic table and create a mini-poster. The poster should include the element’s name, symbol, atomic number, and some fun facts about it. This will encourage her to learn more about the elements around her.

  • Atom Dance:

    To make learning fun, Ursula will create a dance representing how atoms bond together to form molecules. Each movement can represent a different part of the atom (e.g., spinning for electrons and jumping for protons). This physical activity will help cement her understanding of atomic structure.
