Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kerry will have a solid understanding of fractions, including how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them. Kerry will also be able to apply these skills in real-life situations, making fractions less intimidating and more fun!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations
  • Colored markers or crayons for visual activities
  • Measuring cups or spoons (if available) for practical activities
  • Access to a timer (optional, for timed activities)
  • Basic knowledge of what fractions are and their components (numerator and denominator)

Activities

  • Fraction Pizza Party: Kerry will create a pizza using paper plates and colored markers. Each slice will represent a different fraction (e.g., 1/2, 1/4). Once the pizza is made, we will discuss how to add and subtract the slices to find out how much pizza is left or how much has been eaten.

  • Fraction Scavenger Hunt: Kerry will go on a scavenger hunt around the house to find items that can be represented as fractions (e.g., a half-empty bottle, a quarter of a chocolate bar). Kerry will take notes on each item found and express them as fractions.

  • Cooking with Fractions: If measuring cups or spoons are available, Kerry can follow a simple recipe (like making a smoothie) that requires fractional measurements. This will help illustrate how fractions are used in everyday life.

  • Fraction Art: Using colored markers or crayons, Kerry will create a piece of art that incorporates fractions. For example, drawing a circle and coloring in 1/3 of it in one color and 2/3 in another. This visual representation will help solidify the concept.

Talking Points

  • "Fractions are like slices of pizza. The whole pizza is 1, and each slice represents a part of that whole!"
  • "When we add fractions, we need to have the same denominator, just like having the same size pizza slices to combine them!"
  • "Multiplying fractions is like scaling a recipe. If you want to make half of a recipe, you multiply the ingredients by 1/2!"
  • "Dividing fractions can be tricky, but remember: flip the second fraction and multiply! It’s like sharing a pizza with friends!"
  • "Fractions are everywhere! From cooking to shopping, understanding them helps you make better decisions in daily life!"
