Objective

By the end of this lesson, Madison will be able to analyze a piece of literature, identify key themes and characters, and express her thoughts through creative writing. She will also develop her critical thinking skills by engaging in discussions about the text and its relevance to modern life.

Materials and Prep

  • A notebook or journal for writing
  • A pen or pencil
  • A short story or poem (can be selected based on Madison's interests)
  • Optional: Access to a dictionary or thesaurus (if available)

Before the lesson, choose a short story or poem that resonates with Madison's interests. Familiarize yourself with the text to guide the discussion effectively.

Activities

  • Reading and Reflection: Begin by reading the selected story or poem together. After reading, take some time for Madison to jot down her initial thoughts and feelings about the text. Encourage her to consider what stood out to her the most.
  • Character Exploration: Have Madison choose one character from the text and create a character profile. She can include details such as the character's motivations, challenges, and growth throughout the story. This can be presented in a creative format, such as a poster or a digital presentation.
  • Theme Discussion: Engage in a discussion about the central themes of the text. Ask Madison what she thinks the author is trying to convey and how it relates to her own life or current events. Encourage her to think critically and express her opinions.
  • Creative Writing Prompt: Inspired by the text, have Madison write a short story or poem of her own. She can use similar themes, settings, or character types but put her unique twist on it. Allow her to share her work with you and discuss her creative choices.
