Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have created a unique sculpture using expansion foam and plaster bandages. They will learn to design, sculpt, and finish their artwork while developing their creativity and understanding of three-dimensional art forms.

Materials and Prep

  • Expansion foam
  • Plaster bandages
  • Plastic drop cloth or newspaper (for protecting surfaces)
  • Gloves (to protect hands while working)
  • Scissors or a utility knife (for cutting foam)
  • Water (for mixing with plaster bandages)
  • Container for mixing plaster
  • Sketchbook and pencils (for designing the sculpture)

Before starting the lesson, ensure the workspace is well-ventilated and protected from spills. Familiarize yourself with the properties of expansion foam and plaster bandages to understand how they will behave during the sculpting process.

Activities

  • Design Your Sculpture:

Begin by brainstorming ideas for your sculpture. Use your sketchbook to draw different concepts and decide on the final design. Think about the theme, size, and shape of your sculpture.

  • Building the Base with Expansion Foam:

Once your design is finalized, use expansion foam to create the base structure of your sculpture. Apply the foam in layers, allowing it to expand and set before adding more. This will create a solid foundation for your work.

  • Sealing with Plaster Bandages:

After the foam has cured, cut and apply plaster bandages over the foam structure. This will seal the foam and provide a smooth surface for painting or finishing. Make sure to layer the bandages for strength.

  • Finishing Touches:

Once the plaster has dried, you can sand it down for a smoother finish or paint it to add color and personality to your sculpture. Consider adding texture or additional details with leftover foam or plaster.

Talking Points

  • "How does the expansion foam change the way we think about form and structure?"
  • "Why do you think we use plaster bandages instead of just leaving the foam as is?"
  • "What textures or patterns do you want to create on your sculpture?"
  • "How can color influence the perception of your sculpture?"
  • "What are some famous sculptures that inspire you?"
  • "How does working with three-dimensional materials differ from drawing or painting?"
  • "What challenges do you think you might face while creating your sculpture?"
  • "How can you incorporate your personal style into your sculpture?"
  • "What are some techniques you can use to ensure your sculpture is stable?"
  • "How can you use light and shadow to enhance your sculpture's features?"
  • "What safety precautions should we take when working with these materials?"
  • "How does the drying time of the foam and plaster affect your workflow?"
  • "What do you want your sculpture to communicate to viewers?"
  • "How can you use this technique in future art projects?"
  • "What did you learn about patience and creativity through this process?"
