Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have created a unique sculpture using expansion foam and plaster bandages. They will understand the basic principles of sculpture, explore the elements of art, and gain insight into the work of contemporary artists who use similar materials and techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Expansion foam
  • Plaster bandages
  • Protective gloves
  • Plastic sheeting or newspaper (for workspace protection)
  • Basic sculpting tools (optional)
  • Pencil and sketchbook for design planning
  • Research materials (internet access, art books, etc.)

Before starting, ensure the workspace is well-ventilated and protected from spills. Familiarize yourself with safety precautions when using expansion foam and plaster bandages.

Activities

  • Research Artists:

Begin by researching contemporary artists who use foam and plaster in their work. Look for artists like Anish Kapoor or Jeff Koons, who incorporate similar materials. Take notes on their techniques and styles.

  • Design Your Sculpture:

Using your sketchbook, create several designs for your sculpture. Think about the elements of art—line, shape, form, space, color, and texture. Choose a design that resonates with you and reflects your artistic vision.

  • Building the Sculpture:

Using expansion foam, start building your sculpture based on your design. Remember that foam expands, so apply it gradually. Once the foam has cured, you can shape it further before applying plaster bandages for added strength and texture.

  • Finishing Touches:

After the plaster bandages have dried, you can paint or decorate your sculpture. Consider how color and texture can enhance your piece. Think about the emotional response you want your audience to have.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a sculpture successful? Is it the materials, the design, or the message?"
  • "How does the use of expansion foam change the way we think about traditional sculpture materials?"
  • "Can you identify the elements of art in your own design? How do they work together?"
  • "Researching artists can inspire your work. Which artist's style resonates with you the most and why?"
  • "Think about the form of your sculpture. How does it interact with the space around it?"
  • "What emotions do you want your sculpture to evoke in those who see it?"
  • "How does texture play a role in your sculpture? Can you think of ways to enhance it?"
  • "Consider the balance and proportion of your sculpture. Does it feel stable or dynamic?"
  • "What challenges do you anticipate while working with foam and plaster? How can you overcome them?"
  • "How can you use color to express your ideas in your sculpture?"
  • "What storytelling elements can you incorporate into your sculpture?"
  • "How does your sculpture reflect your personal style or interests?"
  • "How can you critique your work and make improvements in future projects?"
  • "What safety precautions are important when working with expansion foam and plaster bandages?"
  • "How does working with three-dimensional materials differ from two-dimensional art forms?"
  • "What did you learn about the process of sculpture that surprised you?"
