Objective

By the end of this lesson, Cullen will understand the basic principles of how rockets work, their historical significance, and how to create a simple homemade rocket safely. He will also explore the math and science behind rockets, as well as express his creativity through art.

Materials and Prep

  • Empty plastic bottle
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • Measuring spoons
  • Safety goggles (if available)

Before the lesson, make sure to discuss safety precautions when conducting experiments, especially when dealing with vinegar and baking soda. It's important to work in a well-ventilated area and to wear safety goggles if possible.

Activities

  • Rocket Science Experiment: Cullen will create a simple rocket using an empty plastic bottle, vinegar, and baking soda. He will measure the ingredients and observe the chemical reaction that propels the rocket. This will help him understand the basic principles of thrust and propulsion.
  • History of Rockets: Cullen will research the history of rockets, focusing on important figures like Robert Goddard. He will create a timeline on paper illustrating key milestones in rocket development.
  • Rocket Art: After learning about rockets, Cullen will use crayons or markers to design his own rocket. He can draw the features he thinks are important for a rocket, such as fins, engines, and colors.
