Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills while having fun going for a scooter ride.
Materials and Prep
- Scooter
- Open outdoor space
Before starting the lesson, make sure you know how to ride a scooter and are familiar with basic arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction.
Activities
- Warm-up: Before going for a scooter ride, let's warm up our bodies with some jumping jacks. Do 10 jumping jacks and count them out loud.
- Counting Scooter Ride: Hop on your scooter and ride around the designated area. Count each time you complete a full circle. How many circles can you do?
- Addition and Subtraction Scooter Ride: While riding your scooter, ask yourself addition and subtraction questions. For example, if you start with 5 circles and ride for 3 more, how many circles will you have in total? If you have 8 circles and you ride away 2, how many circles will be left?
- Race to the Finish: Set up a finish line and challenge yourself to reach it as quickly as possible. Time yourself and try to beat your previous records. Count how many seconds it takes you to cross the finish line.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Mathematics is all around us, even when we are having fun on a scooter ride."
- "Counting helps us keep track of how many circles we complete on our scooter."
- "Addition means combining numbers together. For example, if we start with 5 circles and ride for 3 more, we can add 5 + 3 to find the total number of circles."
- "Subtraction means taking away numbers. For example, if we have 8 circles and we ride away 2, we can subtract 2 from 8 to find how many circles are left."
- "By timing ourselves and trying to beat our previous records, we can practice counting seconds and improve our scooter riding skills."
