Objective

By the end of this lesson, Sadie will have a better understanding of farm life, including the roles of different animals, the importance of crops, and how weather affects farming. She will also engage in fun, hands-on activities that reinforce these concepts.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pencil for taking notes
  • Colored markers or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • Outdoor space for activities (backyard or park)
  • Simple farm animal pictures (can be drawn or printed)
  • Craft supplies (paper, glue, scissors) for creating a farm scene)

Before the lesson, ensure that you have a safe outdoor space for activities and gather any craft supplies you might need. You can also prepare some fun farm animal facts to share with Sadie!

Activities

  • Farm Animal Exploration:

Take a walk outside or visit a local farm if possible. Look for animals such as cows, chickens, and sheep. Discuss what each animal contributes to the farm and how they live.

  • Weather and Farming Discussion:

Talk about how different weather conditions affect farming. For instance, how does rain help crops grow? What happens during a drought? Draw a picture of a sunny day and a rainy day on the farm.

  • Create Your Own Farm:

Using craft supplies, have Sadie create her own farm scene. She can include animals, crops, and a barn. Encourage her to be creative and think about how each part of the farm works together.

  • Farmyard Bingo:

Create a bingo card with different farm animals and crops. As you call out names, Sadie can mark them on her card. This will reinforce her knowledge of farm life in a fun way!

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think farms are important for our food supply?"
  • "Can you name some animals that live on a farm? What do they provide?"
  • "How does rain help the plants grow? What happens if it doesn't rain?"
  • "What is your favorite farm animal? Why do you like it?"
  • "How do farmers take care of their animals?"
  • "What do you think a day in the life of a farmer looks like?"
  • "How do different seasons affect farming?"
  • "What crops do you think are grown in your area? Why?"
  • "What can we do to help farmers and the environment?"
  • "What was your favorite part of creating your farm scene?"
