Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe different geometric shapes found in cats.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Coloring materials (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
- Images or drawings of cats
Activities
-
Start by discussing different geometric shapes with the student. Show them examples of shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.
Ask the student to observe the images or drawings of cats and identify any geometric shapes they can find on the cats' bodies. Encourage them to look for circles in the eyes, triangles in the ears, rectangles in the body, etc.
-
Provide the student with a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw a cat using various geometric shapes. They can start with a large shape for the body, and then add smaller shapes for the head, ears, eyes, nose, etc.
Once they have finished drawing, they can color their cat using the coloring materials.
-
Ask the student to share their cat drawing with you and explain which geometric shapes they used to create different parts of the cat.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Shapes are all around us, even in things we love like cats."
- "We can find different shapes in different parts of a cat's body."
- "Circles can be found in the eyes of a cat."
- "Triangles can be found in the ears of a cat."
- "Rectangles can be found in the body of a cat."
- "By using different shapes, we can create our own drawings of cats."
- "Drawing and identifying shapes helps us understand geometry."
