Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how to divide fractions and will be able to apply this knowledge to solve problems involving fraction division confidently.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations
  • A whiteboard or chalkboard (if available) for demonstrations
  • Fraction cards (create these by writing different fractions on pieces of paper)
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure the student understands basic fraction concepts, such as what a numerator and denominator are, as well as how to simplify fractions.

Activities

  • Fraction Flip Game:

Create fraction cards with different fractions. The student will draw two cards, one for the numerator and one for the denominator, and they will divide the fractions. They can practice flipping the second fraction and multiplying to find the answer.

  • Real-World Fraction Problems:

Pose real-world scenarios where dividing fractions is necessary, such as cooking or dividing a pizza. Have the student write out the problems and solve them step by step.

  • Fraction Relay Race:

If space allows, create a relay race where the student has to solve a series of fraction division problems. Each correct answer allows them to move to the next station. This adds a fun physical element to the lesson!

  • Fraction Story Creation:

Ask the student to create a story that involves dividing fractions. This could be a cooking story, a sports story, or any scenario they enjoy. They will then present it and explain how the division of fractions plays a role in the story.

Talking Points

  • "Dividing fractions might seem tricky at first, but once you know the steps, it becomes easier! Remember, we multiply by the reciprocal."
  • "What do you think happens when we divide by a fraction? It’s like asking how many times that fraction fits into another number!"
  • "Let’s think of a real-life example. If you have 1/2 of a cake and you want to share it with a friend, how much does each person get? This is a perfect time to divide fractions!"
  • "When we divide by a fraction, we are finding out how many of those fractions fit into the whole. It’s like counting how many 1/4 pieces fit into 1 whole!"
  • "Don't forget to simplify your answers! Just like in life, we want to make things as simple as possible."
