Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will be able to prepare a delicious spaghetti Bolognese from scratch. He will learn about the ingredients, cooking techniques, and the importance of timing in creating a well-balanced meal.

Materials and Prep

  • Spaghetti pasta (enough for 2 servings)
  • Ground beef or turkey (about 1 pound)
  • Olive oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Onion (1, chopped)
  • Garlic (2 cloves, minced)
  • Carrot (1, diced)
  • Celery (1 stalk, diced)
  • Canned tomatoes (1 can, crushed or diced)
  • Tomato paste (2 tablespoons)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • Italian seasoning (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • A pot for boiling pasta
  • A skillet for the sauce
  • A wooden spoon for stirring

Before starting, ensure you have a clean cooking area and all ingredients prepped. It's helpful to read through the entire recipe to understand the steps involved.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Start by reviewing each ingredient. Discuss where they come from and why they are used in the dish. This can include the nutritional value of vegetables or the role of herbs and spices in flavoring.

  • Cooking Demonstration:

Guide Brodi through the cooking process step-by-step. Show him how to sauté vegetables, cook the meat, and combine everything into a sauce. Encourage him to ask questions as you go along.

  • Taste Testing:

As the sauce simmers, have Brodi taste it and suggest adjustments. This is a great way to learn about balancing flavors and personalizing a recipe.

  • Plating and Presentation:

Once the dish is complete, discuss the importance of presentation. Have Brodi plate the spaghetti Bolognese nicely and sprinkle some Parmesan on top. Take a photo of the final dish!
