Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize, read, and write words that contain the phonics sounds "ou" and "ow." They will also understand how to use these sounds in everyday language through fun activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or crayons
  • Whiteboard (optional)
  • Space to move around for activities

Before the lesson, make sure to explain the sounds "ou" and "ow" to the student. You can use simple examples like "cloud" for "ou" and "cow" for "ow."

Activities

  • Sound Hunt

Go on a "sound hunt" around the house or yard. Look for objects that have the "ou" or "ow" sounds in their names, like "cloud," "house," "cow," or "flower." Write them down or draw pictures of them!

  • Word Creation

Using the paper and crayons, create a list of words that contain "ou" and "ow." Then, draw a picture for each word. For example, draw a cow for "cow" or a cloud for "cloud."

  • Phonics Relay

Set up a fun relay race! Place paper with "ou" and "ow" words on one side of the room. The student runs to grab a paper, reads the word out loud, and then races back. Repeat until all words are read!

  • Story Time

Read a short story together or make one up that includes several "ou" and "ow" words. Encourage the student to listen for the sounds and point them out as you read.
