Objective
By the end of this lesson, S will have expanded their vocabulary through engaging activities related to "The Touch of Magic" by Annie Sullivan, enabling them to better understand and appreciate the themes and language of the text.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or journal for writing vocabulary words and definitions
- Pens or pencils
- Access to "The Touch of Magic" by Annie Sullivan (if needed for reference)
- A list of vocabulary words from the book (can be prepared beforehand)
- Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, etc.) for creative activities
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with key vocabulary words from the book to facilitate discussion and activities.
Activities
- Word Mapping: Create a visual map of selected vocabulary words. For each word, write its definition, use it in a sentence, and illustrate it with a drawing. This will help S connect the meaning of the word with a visual representation.
- Vocabulary Charades: Play a game of charades using the vocabulary words. S can act out the words without speaking while you guess. This activity encourages creativity and reinforces understanding of the words through physical expression.
- Word Story: Write a short story using at least five vocabulary words from "The Touch of Magic." Encourage S to be imaginative and use the words in context, which will help solidify their understanding and usage.
- Vocabulary Quiz Show: Create a fun quiz game where you ask S questions about the vocabulary words. For example, you can ask for definitions, synonyms, or to use the word in a sentence. Make it competitive by timing the answers or keeping score!
- Illustrated Vocabulary Book: Design a mini illustrated vocabulary book. Each page can feature a different vocabulary word, its definition, a sentence, and an illustration. This will serve as a creative reference for S in the future.
