Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kaitlyn will be able to create and illustrate her own characters based on the story she has developed. She will understand the basics of character design, including personality traits, visual features, and how to express emotions through drawing.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any kind will do)
  • Pencil or pen for drawing
  • Colored pencils or markers (if available)
  • A comfortable space to draw

Before the lesson, Kaitlyn should have her story idea written down, including the main characters she wants to illustrate. Encourage her to think about what makes each character special and what their personality is like.

Activities

  • Character Brainstorming: Start by having Kaitlyn list out the main characters in her story. For each character, she can write down three key traits that define them. This will help her think about how to visually represent these traits in her drawings.

  • Sketching the Characters: Kaitlyn can begin sketching her characters based on the traits she listed. Encourage her to think about different poses and expressions that match the characters' personalities. Remind her that it’s okay to make mistakes—drawing is all about practicing!

  • Coloring and Final Touches: Once she has her sketches, Kaitlyn can color them in using colored pencils or markers. Discuss how colors can represent emotions (like red for anger or blue for sadness) and encourage her to choose colors that reflect her characters' personalities.

  • Character Presentation: Kaitlyn can present her characters to you, explaining who they are and what role they play in her story. This will help her practice sharing her ideas and boost her confidence in her creative work.

Talking Points

  • "What are three words you would use to describe your character? Think about their personality!"
  • "How do you think your character would stand or move? Let’s try drawing them in different poses!"
  • "What colors do you think represent your character? Remember, colors can show feelings!"
  • "Can you tell me a little story about your character while you draw? This can help you imagine them better!"
  • "When you show your characters to me, I want to hear all about them! What makes them special?"
