Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how germs spread and the importance of washing hands to stay healthy. They will also learn to observe and describe their findings from a simple science experiment.
Materials and Prep
- Bowl
- Water
- Pepper
- Liquid soap
Before starting the lesson, make sure to have all materials ready. Explain to the student that pepper will represent germs and that liquid soap will help to show how washing hands can remove germs.
Activities
-
Watch the Video: Start by watching the Sid the Science Kid video about germs. Discuss what germs are and how they can make us sick.
-
Make Predictions: Ask the student to predict what will happen when we add soap to the water with pepper. Write down their predictions in both English and Spanish.
-
Conduct the Germ Experiment: Fill the bowl with water and sprinkle pepper on top. Then, dip a soapy finger into the water and observe what happens. Discuss the results together.
-
Write Observations: After the experiment, have the student write or draw what they observed in both English and Spanish.
