Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of human body functions, including how different systems work together to keep us healthy and active. They will learn about the heart, lungs, digestive system, and muscles through fun activities and discussions.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or crayons
- A large piece of cardboard or poster board
- String or yarn (optional)
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
- Access to a quiet space for activities
Activities
-
Draw Your Body:
The student will draw a large outline of a human body on paper. They can label different body parts and write down what each part does. Encourage creativity with colors!
-
Heart Pumping Game:
Using string or yarn, create a model of a heart. The student can simulate how blood flows through the heart by using small balls or marbles to represent blood cells. They can "pump" the heart to see how it works!
-
Breathing Balloon:
Have the student blow up a balloon to understand how lungs work. Discuss how our lungs expand and contract when we breathe in and out, just like the balloon!
-
Digestive Journey:
Using a piece of cardboard, create a "digestive system" path. The student can use small items (like marbles) to represent food and move them along the path, explaining what happens at each stage of digestion.
Talking Points
- "Did you know your heart is like a pump? It keeps blood moving all around your body!"
- "Your lungs are like balloons! They fill up with air when you breathe in."
- "The digestive system is like a long slide! Food goes on a journey through your body."
- "Muscles help us move! They work when we want to lift, run, or even smile!"
- "Every part of your body has a special job. Together, they keep you healthy!"
- "What do you think happens if one part of your body doesn’t work? Let’s explore!"
- "Your body is amazing! It can heal itself and grow stronger with good food and exercise!"
- "Learning about our bodies helps us take care of them better. What will you do to stay healthy?"
