Materials and Prep

  • Skip Bo card game
  • Pen and paper

No specific preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Skip Bo:

Start by introducing the rules and objectives of the Skip Bo card game. Explain that the game involves using addition and subtraction skills to get rid of all the cards in your stockpile.

  2. Practice Addition and Subtraction:

Play a few rounds of Skip Bo together, focusing on using addition and subtraction to strategically play cards from your hand and stockpile. Encourage the student to mentally calculate the sums and differences as they play.

  3. Math Challenge:

After playing a few rounds, give the student a challenge. Ask them to keep track of the total sum of the numbers on the cards they play during a round. At the end of the round, have them write down the sum and compare it to their opponent's sum. Discuss the concept of higher and lower sums.

  4. Math Fact Practice:

Use the pen and paper to write down a series of addition and subtraction math facts. Have the student solve them as quickly as possible, using Skip Bo cards to help visualize the numbers. Make it a race against the clock or challenge the student to beat their own time.
