Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how food and fiber are produced sustainably in managed environments, and how these practices contribute to health and nutrition. The student will explore the importance of sustainable practices and how they can impact both the environment and our well-being.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for note-taking and drawings
  • Access to a garden or a small space for planting (if possible)
  • Information on sustainable farming practices (can be discussed verbally)
  • Healthy recipes that use fruits, vegetables, and fibers
  • Craft materials (like recycled paper, scissors, and glue) for creating a poster

Activities

  • Garden Exploration:

If you have access to a garden, take a walk around and observe the plants. Talk about how they grow and what they need to thrive. If you don't have a garden, you can explore local parks or look at pictures of different plants and farms.

  • Sustainable Food Recipe Creation:

Using the healthy recipes, create a simple meal using ingredients that are grown sustainably. Discuss why choosing these ingredients is important for health and the environment.

  • Poster Project:

Create a colorful poster that shows how food and fiber are produced sustainably. Include drawings, facts, and why sustainability matters. This can be displayed at home or shared with friends and family.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think sustainable farming means?"
  • "Can you name some foods that are grown sustainably? How do you know?"
  • "Why do you think it's important to eat food that is grown in a way that protects the environment?"
  • "How does growing our own food help us understand where our food comes from?"
  • "What are some ways we can reduce waste when it comes to food?"
  • "Can you think of a plant that gives us both food and fiber?"
  • "How do you feel when you eat fresh fruits and vegetables compared to processed foods?"
  • "What role do you think farmers play in keeping our environment healthy?"
  • "How can we encourage our friends and family to eat more sustainably?"
  • "What is one thing you can do at home to help support sustainable food practices?"
