Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of a penny, its history, and its significance in everyday transactions. The student will also learn how to count and use pennies in practical scenarios.

Materials and Prep

  • Pennies (at least 10-20)
  • Paper and pencil for notes
  • Printable worksheets (if available) or blank paper for activities

Before starting the lesson, ensure you have a good number of pennies available and a quiet space for activities. Familiarize yourself with the history of the penny and some basic math concepts related to counting coins.

Activities

  • Penny Hunt:

    Go on a treasure hunt around the house to find as many pennies as you can. Once you gather them, count how many you found and discuss where they might have come from.

  • Penny History Time:

    Learn about the history of the penny. Discuss when it was created, who is on it, and why it is important. This can include a fun storytelling session about the penny's journey through time.

  • Penny Math Game:

    Create simple math problems using pennies. For example, "If I have 3 pennies and I find 2 more, how many do I have?" This can be turned into a fun game where the student earns a penny for each correct answer!

  • Penny Art:

    Use pennies to create art! Arrange them on a piece of paper to make shapes or patterns. This will help with fine motor skills while also being creative.
