Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the significance of the environment in human life and the important interrelationships between humans and the environment. They will be able to identify how humans impact the environment and explore ways to protect it.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A notebook for taking notes
  • A timer (optional)
  • Access to a garden or outdoor space (if available)

Before the lesson, think about local environmental issues or features in your area that could be discussed. Prepare some questions to encourage thinking about the environment.

Activities

  • Nature Walk:

Take a walk outside to observe the natural environment. Encourage the student to note different plants, animals, and any signs of human impact, like litter or pollution. After the walk, discuss what they saw and how it relates to human life.

  • Draw Your Environment:

Have the student create a drawing of their favorite place in nature. They should include different elements like plants, animals, and any signs of human presence. Ask them to think about how these elements interact with each other.

  • Impact Brainstorm:

Ask the student to brainstorm ways humans impact the environment, both positively and negatively. They can write these down in their notebook. Afterward, discuss ways we can help protect the environment.

Talking Points

  • "The environment is everything around us, like air, water, plants, and animals. It’s important because it provides us with what we need to live."
  • "Humans and the environment are connected. Our actions can help or hurt the environment. For example, planting trees helps clean the air!"
  • "Have you ever seen litter on the ground? That can harm animals and plants. We can help by picking it up!"
  • "Let’s think about how we can take care of our environment. What are some things you can do every day to help?"
  • "Did you know that recycling helps save resources? It means we can use things again instead of throwing them away!"
