Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of the environment to human life and how humans and the environment are interconnected. The student will be able to identify ways to protect the environment and appreciate its significance in their daily life.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or crayons
  • A notebook for journaling
  • A timer (or a clock)
  • Access to a garden or outdoor space (if possible)

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has a quiet space to work and is aware of the importance of being respectful to nature during outdoor activities.

Activities

  • Nature Walk and Observation:

Take a walk outside and observe the environment. Look for plants, animals, and any signs of human impact on nature. Encourage the student to take notes in their notebook about what they see and hear.

  • Environmental Drawing:

After the nature walk, have the student create a drawing of their favorite thing they observed. This could be a tree, a flower, or an animal. Discuss why they chose that subject and how it relates to the environment.

  • Human-Environment Connection Journal:

Ask the student to write a short journal entry about how they think humans depend on the environment. They can include things like air, water, food, and shelter.

  • Solution Brainstorming:

Have a brainstorming session where the student thinks of ways they can help protect the environment. List these ideas on paper and discuss them together.

Talking Points

  • "The environment is everything around us, like the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the plants and animals we see. Can you think of something in nature that is important to you?"
  • "Humans and the environment are connected. We need clean air and water to live. What do you think would happen if the air or water was dirty?"
  • "Every time we use something from nature, like food or wood for our homes, we should think about how to use it wisely. How can we make sure we don’t waste these resources?"
  • "There are many ways we can help the environment, like recycling, planting trees, and saving water. What is one thing you can do to help?"
  • "Nature gives us so much, and it’s our job to take care of it. Why do you think it’s important to protect the environment?"
