Objective

By the end of this lesson, Sami will understand the basic mechanics of how cars work, explore the history of automobiles, and learn about supercars. Sami will also engage in creative activities that reinforce these concepts through art, writing, and math.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to YouTube for educational clips
  • Paper and colored pencils for drawing
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Printable diagrams of car parts (can be found online)
  • Basic math tools (calculator, pencil, paper)

Activities

  • YouTube Exploration:

Start by watching a couple of YouTube clips about how cars work. A great video is "How Cars Work" by SciShow. This will provide a foundation for understanding the engine, transmission, and other key components.

  • Visual Diagram Creation:

Sami will create a visual diagram of a car's engine. Using printable diagrams as a reference, Sami can label parts like the fuel injector, spark plug, and exhaust system.

  • Supercar Research:

Research supercars like the Bugatti Chiron or Tesla Roadster. Sami can create a mini-presentation about what makes these cars special, including their speed, design, and technology.

  • Math Challenge:

Calculate the speed of a supercar. For example, if a Bugatti Chiron can go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, Sami can calculate the average speed in miles per hour during that time.

  • Creative Writing:

Sami will write a short story or a poem about a day in the life of a supercar, describing its adventures and experiences on the road.

Talking Points

  • "Cars are like big machines that help us get from one place to another. Do you know what the main parts of a car are?"
  • "The engine is like the heart of the car. It gives the car power to move! Can you think of how an engine might work?"
  • "Supercars are special because they can go really fast! For example, the Bugatti Chiron can reach speeds over 300 miles per hour. Isn't that incredible?"
  • "Math is important in cars too! We can calculate how fast a car goes or how far it can travel in a certain amount of time. Would you like to try a math problem with me?"
  • "Art helps us express our ideas. When you create a diagram or a story about cars, you are using your creativity to show what you learned!"
