Objective

By the end of this lesson, Karen will have expanded her vocabulary through engaging activities that align with Year 12 benchmarks and her Diploma of Business studies. She will learn new business-related terms, practice their usage in context, and develop confidence in her language skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for writing down new vocabulary
  • Flashcards for vocabulary practice
  • Access to a dictionary (physical or online) for definitions
  • Printed articles or case studies related to business
  • Whiteboard or large paper for collaborative activities

Before the lesson, prepare a list of business-related vocabulary words that are relevant to Karen's studies. Ensure that the articles or case studies selected are appropriate for her level and interests.

Activities

  • Vocabulary Flashcard Game:

Create flashcards with business vocabulary words on one side and their definitions on the other. Karen can quiz herself or you can take turns quizzing each other. This will help reinforce her memory and understanding of the terms.

  • Contextual Sentence Creation:

Select 5-10 new vocabulary words and have Karen create sentences using them in a business context. This will encourage her to think critically about how to apply the vocabulary in real-world scenarios.

  • Reading Comprehension Activity:
  • Business Role-Play:

Engage in a role-play scenario where Karen has to use her vocabulary in a mock business meeting or presentation. This will give her practical experience in using the language in a professional setting.

Talking Points

  • "Vocabulary is the foundation of effective communication, especially in business. The more words you know, the better you can express your ideas."
  • "When creating sentences, think about the context in which these words are used. This will help you remember them better."
  • "Summarizing what you read in your own words is a great way to reinforce your understanding of the material."
  • "Role-playing real-life scenarios can make learning vocabulary more engaging and applicable to your future career."
