Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will understand the science behind natural disasters, including their causes, effects, and the role of technology in disaster prediction and response. This will be accomplished through engaging discussions and analysis of natural disaster movies.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to natural disaster movies (e.g., "Twister," "San Andreas," "Dante's Peak")
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Internet access for research (if needed)
  • Preparation: Choose one or two movies to watch that highlight different types of natural disasters.

Activities

  • Movie Screening: Watch the selected natural disaster movie(s). Encourage Brodi to take notes on the types of disasters depicted, the science behind them, and the characters' responses.

  • Discussion and Analysis: After watching, engage in a discussion about the scientific accuracy of the events portrayed. What was realistic? What was exaggerated for dramatic effect?

  • Research Project: Choose one natural disaster (e.g., earthquakes, hurricanes) and research its causes, effects, and safety measures. Present findings in a creative format (e.g., poster, slideshow).

  • Creative Writing: Write a short story or a diary entry from the perspective of someone experiencing a natural disaster. This will help Brodi empathize with those affected and understand the human aspect of these events.
