Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of what it would be like to survive on a deserted island. They will explore basic survival skills, the importance of resourcefulness, and the concept of ecosystems, all while engaging in creative thinking and problem-solving activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and drawing
  • A quiet space for reflection and creativity
  • Optional: a timer or clock to manage activity time
  • Knowledge of basic survival skills (e.g., finding food, building shelter, etc.) is helpful but not necessary.

Activities

  1. Island Survival Plan

The student will create a detailed survival plan for their deserted island adventure. They will outline what items they would bring, how they would find food and water, and where they would build their shelter. This activity encourages critical thinking and planning skills.

  2. Creative Island Map

The student will draw a map of their imagined deserted island, including key features like a freshwater source, shelter location, and areas for foraging. This activity promotes creativity and spatial awareness.

  3. Survival Skills Role Play

The student will role-play different survival scenarios, such as finding food, building a fire, or signaling for help. This interactive activity allows them to think on their feet and practice problem-solving in a fun way.

  4. Ecosystem Exploration

The student will research and discuss the types of ecosystems that might exist on a deserted island, such as tropical, temperate, or arctic. They will consider the flora and fauna that would be present and how they would impact survival.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think are the most important items to bring if you were stranded on a deserted island?"
  • "How would you go about finding food and water? Can you think of any natural sources?"
  • "Why is it important to have a plan for building shelter? What materials might you use?"
  • "Can you name some animals or plants you might find on a deserted island? How could they help or hinder your survival?"
  • "What would you do if you encountered a dangerous animal? How can you stay safe?"
