Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and analyze the symbolism present in the movies "Finding Nemo" and "The Little Mermaid." They will understand how these symbols contribute to the overall themes and messages of the films.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to "Finding Nemo" and "The Little Mermaid" movies.
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes.
  • Optional: A comfortable space to watch the movies.

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has watched both movies or is familiar with their plots and characters.

Activities

  • Symbol Scavenger Hunt:

As the student watches each movie, have them jot down symbols they notice. This could include objects, colors, or characters that seem to represent larger ideas. After watching, discuss their findings.

  • Symbolism Collage:

Using their notes, the student can create a collage that visually represents the symbols they found in each movie. They can draw, cut out pictures from magazines, or use any materials available to them.

  • Group Discussion:

Engage in a discussion about the themes of each movie. Ask the student to share their thoughts on how the symbols contribute to the story. Encourage them to think critically about the characters’ journeys.

  • Character Symbolism Analysis:

Choose a character from each movie and analyze what they symbolize. The student can write a short paragraph explaining their thoughts on how that character represents certain themes or ideas.

Talking Points

  • "Symbolism in films helps us understand deeper meanings. What do you think a symbol represents in a story?"
  • "In 'Finding Nemo,' the ocean can symbolize both adventure and danger. How do you think this affects the characters?"
  • "Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid' represents the struggle for identity. Why do you think her desire to be human is significant?"
  • "Colors can also be symbolic. For example, how does the color blue play a role in both movies?"
  • "Think about the journey of both Nemo and Ariel. How do their journeys symbolize growth and self-discovery?"
  • "What do you think the relationship between parents and children symbolizes in these films?"
  • "Can you think of a moment in either movie where a symbol really stood out to you? Why was it memorable?"
