Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Bill of Rights, be able to identify different types of rights, and create a human diorama to visually represent these rights.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (for drawing and writing)
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Cardboard or a large piece of paper (for the diorama base)
  • Access to the internet or printed materials about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Bill of Rights

Activities

  • Introduction to Human Rights: Start by reading a child-friendly version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Discuss what human rights are and why they are important for everyone.

  • Types of Rights Exploration: Create a chart that lists different types of rights found in the Bill of Rights. For each right, the student will write a short description and draw a related picture.

  • Human Diorama Project: Using the materials, create a diorama that represents various human rights. The student can create figures and scenes that illustrate at least three different rights from their chart.

  • "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created to make sure everyone in the world knows their rights. Why do you think it’s important for people to know their rights?"
  • "The Bill of Rights is a special part of the laws in our country. Can you name a right that you think is really important?"
  • "Human rights protect everyone, no matter where they live, what they look like, or what they believe. Isn’t it cool that we all have rights?"
  • "Some rights are about freedom, like the right to express yourself. How do you express yourself?"
  • "Other rights are about safety, like the right to be treated fairly. Why do you think it’s important to be treated fairly?"
  • "When you create your diorama, think about how you can show these rights in a fun way! What colors and images will you use?"
  • "After we finish, we can share our dioramas with each other! What do you want to tell others about your rights?"
  • "Remember, everyone has rights, and it’s important to help others know about them too. How can you help spread the word?"
  • "Learning about rights is just the first step. How can you use what you learned to make the world a better place?"
