Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of the 1820 British settlers in South Africa and will create a unique piece of art or craft that reflects this historical period. The student will explore the challenges and experiences of the settlers while expressing their creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or canvas for drawing/painting
  • Colored pencils, markers, or paints
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Natural materials (like leaves or twigs) for crafts
  • A notebook for jotting down thoughts and reflections
  • Access to a computer or books for research (optional)

Before the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of who the British settlers were and their reasons for coming to South Africa. A brief overview of the historical context will help set the stage for the activities.

Activities

  • Research and Reflection:

Start by researching the 1820 British settlers. What were their reasons for moving to South Africa? What challenges did they face? Write down key points in your notebook to refer to later.

  • Create a Historical Collage:

Using the paper or canvas, create a collage that represents the life of the settlers. Include images, words, and symbols that you think capture their experiences and culture.

  • Nature Art:

Go outside and collect natural materials like leaves or twigs. Use these materials to create an art piece that reflects the environment the settlers encountered. You could create a landscape or a representation of a settlement.

  • Storytelling Through Art:

Choose a specific story or experience from the settlers' lives that you found interesting during your research. Create a drawing or painting that illustrates this story. Be prepared to explain your artwork!
