Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to prepare a simple and delicious dish using basic cooking techniques. They will learn about ingredient selection, cooking methods, and the importance of presentation in cooking.

Materials and Prep

  • Basic cooking utensils (knife, cutting board, mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons)
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., pasta, vegetables, olive oil, salt, pepper)
  • Access to a stove or cooking surface
  • Apron and oven mitts for safety
  • Knowledge of basic kitchen safety (e.g., handling knives, using the stove)

Activities

  • Recipe Selection:

Start by choosing a simple recipe that interests the student. Discuss the ingredients and why they are chosen. This can be a pasta dish, salad, or stir-fry.

  • Ingredient Prep:

Have the student wash, chop, and measure out all the ingredients. This will teach them about preparation and organization in cooking.

  • Cooking Time:

Guide the student through the cooking process, explaining each step as you go. Encourage them to ask questions and make observations about how the ingredients change during cooking.

  • Plating and Presentation:

Once the dish is cooked, focus on how to present it nicely on a plate. Discuss the importance of presentation in cooking and let the student arrange the food creatively.

  • Taste Testing:

Finally, taste the dish together! Encourage the student to describe the flavors and textures they experience, reinforcing the learning process.
