Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to listen to and respond to various texts and the communication of others both informally and in a structured manner. The student will enhance their active listening skills, improve their ability to articulate thoughts, and engage in meaningful discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • No additional materials are required for this lesson.
  • Prepare a selection of short stories or articles to read aloud.
  • Be ready to facilitate discussions and encourage responses from the student.

Activities

  • Story Time Discussion:

Read a short story or article aloud to the student. After reading, ask the student questions about the text to encourage them to think critically and express their opinions. This will help them practice both listening and responding.

  • Role Play:

Choose a scenario (like a school debate or a friendly conversation) and role-play different characters. This activity will allow the student to practice responding to different viewpoints and improve their conversational skills.

  • Listening Game:

Play a game where you say a sentence, and the student must repeat it back to you. Then, have them change one word and explain why they made that change. This will enhance their listening and critical thinking skills.

  • Opinion Sharing:

Present a topic or question (like "What is your favorite animal and why?") and give the student time to think. Then, have them share their opinion and respond to any follow-up questions you may have. This will help them practice articulating their thoughts clearly.

Talking Points

  • "Listening is just as important as talking. When you listen well, you understand better!"
  • "Responding means sharing your thoughts. It's like having a conversation where both people get to share!"
  • "What do you think about the story? Your opinion matters!"
  • "In a debate, it's important to listen to the other side. You can learn something new!"
  • "Changing a word in a sentence can change its meaning. Let's see how that works!"
  • "When you share your opinion, remember to explain why you think that way. It helps others understand you!"
  • "Practicing conversations helps us become better communicators. Let's have fun with it!"
  • "Active listening means focusing on what the other person is saying. Can you tell me what you heard?"
  • "Every time we talk, we get better at expressing ourselves. Let's keep practicing!"
  • "Remember, it's okay to ask questions if you don't understand something. It's a part of learning!"
  • "Talking with others can be a fun way to learn new ideas and perspectives!"
