Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of electricity and will be able to create a simple project that uses electricity. The student will learn how electricity works and how it can be used safely in fun ways.
Materials and Prep
- 1 small battery (like AA or AAA)
- 1 small light bulb (like a flashlight bulb)
- 2 pieces of insulated copper wire (about 10 inches long each)
- 1 piece of cardboard (for a base)
- Scissors (for adult use only)
- Electrical tape (for connecting wires)
- Markers or crayons (for decorating the project)
Before the lesson, make sure to explain to the student that electricity is powerful and should be handled with care. Always supervise the use of batteries and wires.
Activities
-
Introduction to Electricity:
Start by showing the student a battery and a light bulb. Explain how electricity travels from the battery to the light bulb to make it glow. Use simple terms and gestures to illustrate how electricity works.
-
Build a Simple Circuit:
Guide the student in connecting the battery to the light bulb using the wires. Show them how to use electrical tape to secure the connections. When the circuit is complete, the light bulb should light up!
-
Decorate the Project:
Once the light bulb is glowing, let the student decorate the cardboard base with markers or crayons. They can draw pictures or write their name to personalize their project.
-
Show and Tell:
Encourage the student to present their project. They can explain how they made it and what electricity does. This helps build their confidence in sharing their work!
Talking Points
- "Electricity is like magic! It helps things light up and work."
- "See how the battery gives power to the light bulb? That's how electricity travels!"
- "When we connect the wires, we are making a path for electricity to flow."
- "Always be careful with electricity. It can be powerful, just like a superhero!"
- "What did you like most about making your project? Sharing is fun too!"
