Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lindsay will understand the basic concepts of product development, including idea generation, prototyping, and testing. She will also create her own simple product idea and outline the steps needed to bring it to life.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or paper for brainstorming and notes
  • Pencil or pen for writing
  • Colored markers or pencils for drawing ideas
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)

Before the lesson, it might be helpful for Lindsay to think about products she uses daily and consider what she likes or dislikes about them.

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session: Lindsay will spend 15 minutes brainstorming product ideas that solve a problem she has encountered. She can write down as many ideas as possible, no matter how silly they may seem!

  • Sketch Your Product: After selecting her favorite idea from the brainstorming session, Lindsay will create a detailed sketch of her product. She can label the parts and explain how it works.

  • Prototype Creation: Using simple materials available around the house (like cardboard, tape, or plastic), Lindsay will create a basic prototype of her product. This can be a small model that represents her idea.

  • Testing and Feedback: Lindsay will present her prototype to a family member (or even to herself) and ask for feedback. She can then make notes on what improvements could be made based on the feedback received.

Talking Points

  • "Product development is all about taking an idea and turning it into something real that people can use."
  • "Every great product starts with a problem. What problem does your product solve?"
  • "Sketching your idea helps you visualize it better. Don’t worry about being an artist; just focus on getting your ideas down!"
  • "Prototyping is important because it allows you to test your idea and see what works and what doesn’t."
  • "Feedback is a gift! It helps us improve our ideas and make them better for the people who will use them."
