Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand what landfills are, why they are important, and how they are managed in Hong Kong. The student will also learn about waste reduction and recycling through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or crayons
- A large sheet of paper or cardboard for a poster
- Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)
- Knowledge of local landfill sites in Hong Kong (e.g., Tseung Kwan O, West New Territories)
Activities
- Landfill Drawing: The student will draw a picture of a landfill, including different types of waste (e.g., plastic, food scraps, paper). This will help them visualize what a landfill looks like.
- Waste Sorting Game: Create a sorting game where the student categorizes different types of waste (recyclable, compostable, and landfill) using drawings or written words. This will teach them about proper waste disposal.
- Landfill Poster: The student will create a poster about landfills in Hong Kong, including facts they learned and their drawings. This will encourage creativity and reinforce what they've learned.
- Story Time: Read a short story or watch a short video about landfills and waste management. Discuss the story afterward to reinforce understanding.

- "What do you think happens to the waste in a landfill? It can take a very long time to break down!"
- "We can all help by reducing waste, like using reusable bags and bottles instead of single-use items."
