Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lindsay will be able to create and customize designs for a product based on her creative ideas or customer specifications. She will learn about the design process, including brainstorming, sketching, and refining her ideas into a final product.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper for sketching
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Markers or colored pencils for coloring
  • Access to a computer or tablet for digital design (optional)
  • Inspiration sources (magazines, online resources, etc.)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful for Lindsay to think about what types of products she might want to design. This could include clothing, accessories, home decor, or anything else that interests her.

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session:

Lindsay will spend time thinking about different product ideas she might want to create. She can write down her thoughts and draw quick sketches to visualize her ideas.

  • Design Development:

Using her favorite ideas from the brainstorming session, Lindsay will choose one design to develop further. She will create detailed sketches, focusing on colors, shapes, and materials.

  • Create a Prototype:

Once Lindsay has a finalized design, she will create a simple prototype using the materials available. This could be a paper model or a digital mock-up if she has access to a computer.

  • Customer Feedback:

Lindsay will present her design and prototype to a family member or friend (acting as a customer) to get feedback. She will learn how to take constructive criticism and make adjustments to her design.

Talking Points

  • "Designing a product is all about creativity and problem-solving. What do you think makes a product appealing?"
  • "Sketching your ideas helps you visualize them. How do you think colors and shapes can affect the way people feel about a product?"
  • "Creating a prototype is a crucial step in the design process. What do you think are the benefits of making a model before the final product?"
  • "Feedback is an important part of design. How can we use feedback to improve our ideas?"
