Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and discuss various shopping habits at the supermarket, understand the importance of budgeting, and create a simple shopping list based on their needs and preferences.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and list-making.
  • Access to a computer or device for research (if applicable).
  • Optional: A grocery store flyer or online supermarket website to browse products.
  • Basic understanding of budgeting and nutrition concepts.

Activities

  • Grocery Store Scavenger Hunt:

Have the student create a list of common grocery items they would typically buy. Then, they can pretend to "shop" by finding these items in a grocery store flyer or online. This will help them become familiar with different products and their prices.

  • Budgeting Challenge:

Provide the student with a fictional budget (e.g., $50) and have them create a shopping list that meets this budget. They should consider the prices of items and make choices based on necessity and desire.

  • Healthy Choices Discussion:

Discuss the importance of making healthy food choices when shopping. Have the student research and list healthy alternatives to common grocery items and why they are better options.

  • Role Play:

Engage in a role-play scenario where the student acts as the cashier and you as the customer. This activity will help them practice conversational English and understand the shopping experience from both perspectives.

Talking Points

  • "Shopping habits can greatly affect our health and finances. It's important to think about what we need versus what we want."
  • "Creating a budget helps us manage our money better. Can you think of some items that are needs versus wants?"
  • "When shopping, we should consider the nutritional value of the items we buy. What are some healthy foods you like?"
  • "Using a shopping list can help us stay focused and avoid impulse buys. How do you think a list could help you?"
  • "Role-playing can make learning fun! Let's pretend you are the cashier and I am the customer. How would you greet me?"
