Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a beautiful crown using natural materials found in their environment, fostering creativity and a connection to nature.
Materials and Prep
- Leaves (various shapes and sizes)
- Flowers (fresh or dried)
- Twigs or small branches
- Grass or moss
- String or natural twine (optional, for tying pieces together)
- Scissors (for adult use only)
- A flat surface for crafting
Before the lesson, take a walk outside to collect the natural materials. Discuss the different types of items that can be used for the crown. Make sure to choose safe, non-toxic plants!
Activities
-
Nature Walk:
Start with a fun nature walk to collect materials. Look for colorful leaves, interesting twigs, and pretty flowers. Encourage the student to observe the different shapes and colors of the items they find.
-
Crown Design:
Once you have gathered materials, sit down and sketch a design for the crown. Discuss how you will arrange the leaves and flowers. This helps in planning the crown before starting to assemble it.
-
Crown Assembly:
Using the collected materials, start assembling the crown. Use twigs to create a base and attach leaves and flowers using string or by weaving them together. Encourage creativity in the arrangement!
-
Decorate and Wear:
Once the crown is complete, decorate it further if desired. Then, let the student try on their crown and take pictures! Celebrate their hard work.
Talking Points
- "What colors do you see in the leaves and flowers we collected?"
- "Can you find a leaf that is bigger than your hand? How about one that is smaller?"
- "How do you think we can make our crown strong enough to wear?"
- "What is your favorite part of nature? Can we use that in our crown?"
- "How does it feel to create something with your own hands?"
- "What will you pretend to be when you wear your crown? A king or queen, maybe?"
