Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will understand the concept of mise en place, learn its importance in cooking, and apply it by preparing a simple recipe using the mise en place method. She will gain skills in organization and efficiency in the kitchen.

Materials and Prep

  • Cutting board
  • Chef's knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Bowl for mixing ingredients
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., scrambled eggs, salad, or a sandwich)
  • Pencil and paper for notes

Before the lesson, ensure that all ingredients are prepared and available. Discuss with Nadia what recipe she would like to make, and make a list of required ingredients.

Activities

  • Introduction to Mise en Place

Start with a discussion about what mise en place means. Explain that it is a French term that translates to "everything in its place." This is a crucial step in cooking that helps chefs be organized and efficient.

  • Ingredient Preparation

Nadia will gather all the ingredients for her chosen recipe. She will wash, chop, and measure everything before starting to cook, reinforcing the concept of mise en place.

  • Cooking Time

Once everything is prepared, Nadia will follow the recipe to cook her dish. She will notice how having everything ready helps her focus on cooking without interruptions.

  • Reflection and Clean-Up

After cooking, Nadia will take time to reflect on her experience. She can jot down what she enjoyed about the process and how mise en place helped her. Finally, she will help clean up the kitchen.

Talking Points

  • "Mise en place means 'everything in its place.' It is about being organized before you start cooking."
  • "Why do you think being organized is important in the kitchen? It helps us save time and reduces stress while cooking!"
  • "Can you think of a time when being prepared helped you? It’s similar to cooking; preparation leads to better results."
  • "As we prepare our ingredients, think about how it will feel to cook without having to stop and find things."
  • "After we cook, let’s reflect on how mise en place made our cooking experience smoother. What did you like best?"
