Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will be able to understand how to read and use a street directory effectively. This includes identifying key symbols, understanding map scales, and navigating from one location to another using the directory.

Materials and Prep

  • A printed street directory or map of the local area.
  • A notebook and pen for taking notes.
  • Access to a smartphone or computer for additional research (optional).
  • Basic understanding of cardinal directions (North, South, East, West).

Activities

  • Map Scavenger Hunt:

Brodi will be given a list of landmarks or locations to find on the street directory. This activity will help him practice locating places using coordinates and symbols.

  • Create a Route:

Using the street directory, Brodi will choose two locations and plan a route between them. He will then present his route to explain how he navigated using the map.

  • Symbol Matching Game:

Brodi will create flashcards with various symbols found in the street directory. He will then quiz himself or have someone else quiz him on what each symbol represents.
