Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn basic cooking skills, including measuring ingredients, following a recipe, and understanding kitchen safety. They will create a simple dish that they can enjoy and share with their family.

Materials and Prep

  • A clean kitchen space
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., scrambled eggs, pancakes, or a fruit salad)
  • A mixing bowl
  • A whisk or fork
  • A measuring cup and spoons
  • A frying pan or skillet (if cooking) or a cutting board (if preparing a salad)
  • A spatula or spoon
  • A plate for serving

Make sure to wash your hands before starting and have an adult supervise if using sharp objects or a hot stove!

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration: Begin by discussing the ingredients needed for the recipe. Ask the student to identify each ingredient and describe its color, shape, and taste.
  • Measuring Fun: Teach the student how to measure ingredients using cups and spoons. Let them practice measuring out the ingredients for the recipe.
  • Recipe Reading: Together, read through the recipe step-by-step. Discuss what each step means and why it’s important to follow them in order.
  • Cooking Time: Let the student take the lead in cooking or preparing the dish while you guide them. Encourage them to stir, mix, or flip as needed.
  • Taste Test: Once the dish is ready, have a taste test! Discuss what they like about the dish and if there’s anything they would change next time.

  • "Cooking is like science! We mix things together to make something new."
  • "Measuring is super important! If we don’t measure right, our food might not taste good."
  • "Following a recipe is like following a treasure map. We have to do each step to find the yummy treasure!"
  • "Always be careful in the kitchen! We need to keep our hands safe and clean."
  • "What do you think will happen if we cook this ingredient too long? Let’s find out together!"
  • "Tasting our food is the best part! What do you like most about what we made?"
  • "Next time, we can try adding something new to our recipe! What do you think would be fun to add?"
