Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to bake delicious cupcakes from scratch! You will learn how to measure ingredients, mix them together, and decorate your cupcakes to make them look amazing.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter (softened)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Muffin tin
  • Cupcake liners
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Optional: Sprinkles and icing for decoration

Before the lesson, make sure you have all the ingredients and materials ready. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) so it's hot when we put the cupcakes in!

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Start by measuring out all the ingredients. This is an important step because it helps us get the right amounts for yummy cupcakes!

  • Mixing the Batter:

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and butter. Then, add the eggs, milk, and vanilla. Mix it all together until it’s smooth. This is where the magic happens!

  • Filling the Muffin Tin:

Place cupcake liners in the muffin tin and pour the batter into each liner. Make sure to fill them only halfway to give them room to rise!

  • Baking Time:

Carefully place the muffin tin in the preheated oven. Set a timer for 20 minutes and watch as the cupcakes rise and turn golden brown!

  • Decorating:

Once the cupcakes are cool, it’s time to decorate! Use icing and sprinkles to make them look super fun. You can even create different designs!

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think measuring ingredients is important?"
  • "What do you think will happen if we don't mix the batter enough?"
  • "How do you feel about waiting for the cupcakes to bake? It’s like a surprise!"
  • "What colors of icing do you want to use for decorating?"
  • "Can you think of a fun name for your cupcake creation?"
  • "How can we share our cupcakes with family or friends?"
  • "What was your favorite part of making cupcakes today?"
