Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will be able to understand the ingredients and steps involved in making a delicious sausage, apple, and cider casserole. She will also learn about the flavors and textures that come together in this unique dish, and develop her cooking skills through hands-on experience.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 lb sausage (any preferred type)
  • 2 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cups of diced potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil or butter for cooking
  • Oven-safe casserole dish
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the kitchen is clean and safe for cooking. Make sure to wash your hands and gather all the materials listed above.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration

Nadia will explore the ingredients needed for the casserole. She can touch, smell, and taste each ingredient (where appropriate) to understand their unique flavors and how they will contribute to the dish.

  • Cooking Demonstration

As a hands-on activity, Nadia will assist in the cooking process. She will learn how to sauté the sausage and onions, peel and chop the apples, and prepare the potatoes for the casserole.

  • Flavor Pairing Discussion

Engage in a discussion about how the flavors of sausage, apple, and cider complement each other. Nadia can think about other dishes that use similar flavor profiles and share her thoughts.

  • Casserole Assembly

Nadia will assemble the casserole by layering the ingredients in the dish and pouring the cider over the top. This will help her understand the process of building flavors in a dish.

  • Cooking Time and Observation

While the casserole is baking, Nadia can observe the changes happening in the oven. She can note the smells and colors, and discuss what she thinks is happening as the ingredients cook together.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that apples and sausages are often used together in cooking? They create a sweet and savory combination that many people love!"
  • "When we cook, the flavors of the ingredients meld together. This is why we sauté the onions and sausage first; it helps release their flavors into the dish!"
  • "Cider adds a unique sweetness and acidity to the casserole. Can you think of other dishes that use fruit to balance savory flavors?"
  • "Layering ingredients in a casserole is important because it allows each flavor to shine through. What do you think will be the star ingredient in our dish?"
  • "As we bake, the heat transforms our ingredients. What do you think will happen to the apples and potatoes as they cook?"
