Objective

By the end of this lesson, Eli will understand the basics of grocery shopping, including how to create a shopping list, compare prices, and learn about healthy food choices. Eli will also explore the fun of art and music related to grocery shopping!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Printable grocery list template (can be hand-drawn if no printer available)
  • Calculator (or use fingers for counting)
  • Recipe ideas (simple ones that Eli can choose from)
  • Access to a grocery store (real or pretend)

Before the lesson, prepare a few simple recipes that Eli can choose from, and make sure to have a space to create art and music.

Activities

  • Create a Shopping List:

Eli will choose a recipe and write down all the ingredients needed for it. This will help him learn how to organize and plan for grocery shopping.

  • Price Comparison Game:

Using imaginary prices, Eli can compare the costs of different items. This will teach him basic math skills and how to find the best deals.

  • Healthy Food Art:

Eli can draw or create a collage of healthy foods. This activity will encourage him to think about nutrition and express his creativity at the same time.

  • Grocery Store Music:

Eli can create a fun song about grocery shopping using simple rhythms and rhymes. This will help him learn about music while having fun!

  • Physical Education - Grocery Store Relay:

Set up a small obstacle course where Eli has to "collect" grocery items. This will get him moving and help him understand the physical aspect of shopping.

Talking Points

  • Art: "What colors do you think represent healthy foods?"
  • English: "Can you write a sentence about your favorite fruit?"
  • History: "Did you know that grocery stores used to be very different? People used to buy food from markets!"
  • Math: "How can we add up the prices of these items? Let’s count together!"
  • Music: "Let’s make a silly song about our shopping adventure!"
  • Physical Education: "How fast can you run to collect the items in our relay?"
  • Science: "Why do you think fruits and vegetables are good for our bodies?"
  • Social Studies: "What are some foods that people eat in other countries? Let’s learn about them!"
