Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of farming and gardening, including how plants grow, what they need to thrive, and the importance of caring for them.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds (any type you have on hand, like beans or flowers)
  • Small pots or containers (like yogurt cups or recycled containers)
  • Soil (from the garden or store-bought)
  • Water
  • Sunlight (a sunny spot for the plants)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a sunny spot to place the pots and some soil ready for planting.

Activities

  • Planting Seeds:

Help the student fill the pots with soil and plant the seeds. Show them how deep to plant the seeds and how to cover them with soil.

  • Watering the Plants:

Teach the student how to water the seeds gently. Explain how plants need water to grow, just like we need water to stay healthy.

  • Sunshine Dance:

Have a fun dance to celebrate the sun! Explain that plants need sunlight to grow strong and healthy, just like we need sunlight to feel happy.

  • Drawing Time:

Ask the student to draw their favorite plant or flower. This helps them express what they learned and visualize their gardening experience.

Talking Points

  • "Plants are like us; they need food, water, and sunshine to grow!"
  • "When we plant seeds, we are starting a little adventure in growing!"
  • "Can you feel how soft the soil is? It’s like a cozy bed for our seeds!"
  • "Every day, we can check on our plants and see how they are growing, just like watching a friend get taller!"
  • "What do you think will happen to our seeds if we give them lots of love and care?"
