Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of farming and gardening, including how plants grow, what they need to thrive, and the importance of farming in our lives.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type, like beans or flowers)
- Small pots or containers (can be recycled items like yogurt cups)
- Soil (can be gathered from the garden or a potting mix)
- Water
- Sunlight (a sunny spot for the pots)
Before the lesson, make sure you have a sunny spot where the student can place the pots once they are planted. Explain to the student what each material is and how we will use it.
Activities
- Planting Seeds:
Help the student fill the pots with soil and plant the seeds. Talk about how deep to plant them and how they will grow into plants.
- Watering Can Fun:
Let the student use a small cup or watering can to water the seeds after planting. Explain how plants need water to grow, just like we need water to stay healthy!
- Sunshine Dance:
Have a little dance in the sunny spot where the pots will go. Explain how the sun helps the plants grow strong and tall, just like it helps us play outside!
- Story Time:
Read a simple story about a farmer or a garden. Discuss what the farmer does and how they take care of their plants.
Talking Points
- "Plants are like little babies; they need love, water, and sunlight to grow!"
- "Did you know that farmers help us by growing food? Without them, we wouldn’t have yummy fruits and vegetables!"
- "When we plant seeds, we are starting a little adventure! Can you guess what kind of plant will grow?"
- "Every time we water our plants, we are giving them a drink, just like we drink water when we are thirsty!"
- "Let’s watch our plants grow! We can take care of them every day and see how big they get!"
